What we expect it to take to reach commercial operation.
Daratha Atomics is a nuclear energy startup on a mission to make abundant nuclear energy available to power economic development in India and around the world.
India has over 70 years of nuclear energy experience, with the talent, expertise, supply chain and now a regulatory framework opening the sector to private companies. We believe we can build nuclear energy reactors at 10% of developed country costs. If successful, this could transform the economics of modular nuclear energy and bring abundant, affordable electricity to India and the world.
What it will take to bring the first microreactor into commercial operation, in the US and Europe versus in India.
What we expect it to take to reach commercial operation.
What we aim to spend to deploy our first commercial 10 MWe microreactor, built in India.
How to read this. Nobody has yet taken a microreactor all the way to commercial operation, so no actual figure exists. The US and Europe number is our own estimate. The India number is our target for a first commercial unit. Our mission is to deliver at a tenth of the cost, and we will update this page as the facts come in.
Five things come together in India that are hard to find anywhere else.
Deep engineering and nuclear talent, trained at home, at a fraction of Western cost.
Decades of building and operating reactors, from research reactors to a fleet of indigenous power reactors.
Heavy forgings, vessels, pumps, valves and instruments already made in India for the domestic nuclear programme.
A large industrial base that builds heavy capital equipment at globally competitive cost.
A regulatory framework that now opens nuclear energy to private builders.
Every energy source has tradeoffs. Coal and oil are cheap but dirty. Solar and wind are clean but intermittent. Batteries help, but they don't provide baseload power. Nuclear gets you pretty close to having it all.
Low carbon electricity, without the intermittency compromises of renewables.
24/7 power availability, true baseload, not weather dependent supply.
High energy output from a small physical and land footprint.
Built for industrial growth, fabs, data centres, and heavy industry.
Conventional nuclear plants are proven technology built on a model too slow, too capital intensive, and too centralized for the load growth ahead.
One standard design, manufactured at scale in a gigafactory and deployed wherever power is needed, instead of building a massive custom project from scratch every time.
Designed and built on site, one at a time.
CONCEPT ILLUSTRATION
One certified reactor design, deployed infinitely, no bespoke engineering for every site.
Manufacturing on a production line replaces onsite megaproject construction.
Power delivered where demand emerges, not only where the grid already reaches.
Our goal is to move as much construction as practical into a controlled factory environment, where modules can be built, assembled, tested and quality controlled repeatedly before they ever reach a site.
TARGETS TO BE VALIDATED, NOT PERFORMANCE COMMITMENTS. THE TWO FIGURES MEASURE DIFFERENT THINGS: TOTAL DEPLOYMENT TIME VS ON SITE CONSTRUCTION.
Components and modules manufactured and assembled on a controlled production line.
Inspected, tested and quality controlled before leaving the factory.
Designed around Indian road and rail transport limits.
Site works and customer integration, not a bespoke megaproject.
Commissioning, then operation.
Projected AI & data centre load growth in India by 2047.
India's nuclear mission, energy security, and private participation targets.
A factory built microreactor platform, ready for this scale of demand.
India's nuclear sector opened to private capital for the first time since independence, and the country's largest industrial groups are already investing.
Besides building new reactors, India needs to build a new nuclear energy industry.
Besides the reactors, a massive opportunity to build the supply chain around them.
A proven reactor class, engineered for a footprint that fits almost anywhere power is needed.
Fusion, molten salt, liquid metal and gas cooled reactors may all become important. Our first product avoids stacking several new technology risks at once, and engineers proven physics into a compact, repeatable product.

Proven physics, standard modules and rapid assembly: one design that can be built again and again.
Light water and standard low enriched fuel, packed into a vessel sized to travel by road and rail.
Lego like modularity: repeatable modules that are built and tested before they ever reach a site.
Ikea style assembly turns every delivery into a repeatable installation instead of a custom project.

A larger installed base drives compounding value.
Building a nuclear energy microreactor company takes four equally important capabilities: deep nuclear engineering and safety, policy and regulatory engagement, fresh mechanical engineering and product thinking, and global commercialization and capital formation. Here is who covers each.
Decades of hands on experience across BARC, the Indian Navy, NPCIL and AERB.
External and government engagement, with first hand experience as former Vice Chairman of AERB.
Fresh mechanical engineering and entrepreneurial thinking, focused on a standardized, manufacturable reactor product.
Global investment, entrepreneurship and ecosystem building experience for fundraising, capital structure, partnerships, joint ventures and go to market.
Engineering, safety, policy, product and capital in one team.
